LEGALIZATION OF DOCUMENTS

According to Dutch regulations Indian documents can only be used in the Netherlands after being legalized either by the embassy in New Delhi (for documents originating from Northern India) or by the consulate general in Mumbai (for documents originating from Southern India). Please be informed that the authority in the Netherlands that requires the legalization, can still demand verification of the document(s). Please visit Netherlands consulate web-site for details of legalization.

What type of documents are usually legalized?*

• Birth-certificate;
• Marriage certificate;
• Death-certificate;
• Marriage-ability certificate/Affidavit regarding marital status;
• Divorce certificate;
• Court order for adoption;

Requirements for documents to be submitted for legalization

For all documents:

• Original documents only are acceptable for submission;
• 2 photographs on a white background.
• On the day of submission of the application the document should not be older than six months;
• Documents should be in proper condition; laminated documents will not be accepted;
• No overwriting or corrections are permitted on the original documents;
• As a document in a local language cannot be read in the Netherlands, the document should be accompanied by an English version from the office of the issuing authority. Notarized translations or translations from any agency cannot be legalized;
• Documents should preferably not contain initials in the name columns. There are legal ways to have initials in registers changed into fully written names. It is advisable to have initials changed in this manner in the registers before having the document made;
• All documents need to be attested by the competent authorities of the State where they were issued (for example Home Affairs, Public Foreigners Department, General Administration Department) and subsequently by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Patiala House, New Delhi or MEA Branch Secretariat Kolkata.
• Legalization is not limited to the above mentioned documents only. You are requested to contact the Legalization Section for more information regarding the correct sequence of countersignatures for other documents.

The approval process will take 4 - 6 weeks.
The visa will be stamped at the Netherlands Consulate once the approval is received or based on the Reference No received.
